What Are the Signs That I Need a Boiler Replacement?

The middle of winter in Anchorage or the Mat-Su Valley is not the time or place for a boiler to kick the bucket. Be proactive and get yours replaced before you’re in a tight spot! Here are the signs that your boiler may be close to giving up the ghost.

1. Your Boiler is Over 15 Years Old

Age is the first and most obvious sign of a boiler that needs to be replaced. Even a high-quality system that has been regularly maintained can only last around 15 years before it starts to require more repairs, running the risk of kicking off altogether. Speaking of which…

2. The Number of Repairs Have Increased

If your boiler has needed a lot of repairs lately, it’s likely in need of replacement more than anything. Consider the cost. If the amount you are spending in repairs is approaching the full price of a new system, or if you are one repair away from purchasing a new one, go for it!

3. You’re Paying More for Heating

Increases in your heating bill is a sign that your boiler isn’t working as efficiently as it used to. If your system has an efficiency rating of “A” (90%), then there shouldn’t be a problem, so watch your heating bill. A rising heating bill means that you need to replace your system.

4. There Are New & Unusual Noises

Boilers make noises. Some are normal, some indicate faulty parts that need to be repaired, but some indicate a bigger problem. If your system is clanking, banging, or whirring, have an HVAC professional take a look. They may recommend a system replacement.

5. Your Boiler Is Leaking

Smelling sulfur? Are puddles gathering around your boiler? Both gas and water leaks are signs that your system has a problem and can escalate into more serious (and costly) issues for you and your family. If repairs don’t fix the leaks, get your system replaced.

6. There Are Signs of Carbon Monoxide

Carbon monoxide is odorless but no less dangerous for the residents of your household. If you have noticed any of the following signs of a carbon monoxide leak, get everyone out of the house and call an HVAC professional immediately:

  1. Your boiler’s flame is yellow, not blue
  2. There is soot building on and around your boiler
  3. Your windows are collecting condensation

Repairs may fix the CO leak, but if not, a boiler replacement may be required.

7. Your Boiler Simply Isn’t Doing What It Should

The purpose of your boiler is to heat your house when and where you need it too. If your system is taking a long time to heat up (as in, minutes rather than seconds) or if it is heating your house unevenly, see if it can be repaired. If not, replace it.

It’s cold out there, folks. Make sure your boiler is in top working order or get a replacement! The more signs you can identify from this list, the more you need to schedule a boiler replacement with an HVAC professional. Stay warm!
