5 Ways to Keep your Drain Clog Free

One of the most frustrating plumbing issues you’ll have to face is a slow-moving or clogged drain. It slows you down, looks messy, smells unpleasant and can even turn into a bigger problem if it causes water to back up onto your counters or into the floor. For a major clog, a quick call to our plumbing experts at Klebs Mechanical is the best course of action. However, other clogs can be prevented or resolved with some simple DIY action. We’ve put together a few tips to help you keep your drain clog free.

  • Avoid Grease – Letting grease pour into your drain can be one of the leading causes of clogs. Surprisingly, even the smallest amount of oil can be a problem, since it will attach to hair and other debris that may be in the drain already. Make sure you pour grease into a jar or other container for proper disposal.
  • Strain, Don’t Drain – To keep items like vegetable peelings, hair and other larger debris out of the pipes, use a strainer on your drain. You’ll be amazed what it catches and prevents from creating clogs.
  • Try a Simple Home Remedy – There are different DIY drain cleaners you can safely attempt. A handful of baking soda followed by plenty of very hot water is known to help resolve small clogs. Another option is to try white vinegar. Pour a cup down, let it sit for 30 minutes then chase with hot water.
  • Run Your Disposal (if Applicable) – If you have a disposal, using it from time to time is a good way to avoid clogs. One idea is to run it with some ice cubes and cool water–this can help clean up residue left behind by greasy products. Chasing the cubes with a lemon will help keep things smelling fresh.
  • Flush Your Main Line – Your low-flow toilet is great for saving water, but it does keep the mainline from being properly flushed. From time to time, fill a large bucket with water and slowly pour it down your main toilet while flushing. The heavy flow will help keep the main line moving smoothly.

As you can see, there are quite a few things you can do yourself to keep your drains running smoothly. However, one thing to avoid is harsh chemicals. Too many of these can cause problems with your pipes. If you have a clog that is too much to handle alone, give us a call at KLEBS and let our experts resolve the problem for you efficiently and correctly.
