Estimating Technician

The Estimating Technician provides critical technical and administrative support to each Estimator.  This role is responsible for the digital and paper management of bid documents, performing precise mechanical takeoffs (HVAC, Sheetmetal & Plumbing), and facilitating seamless communication between subcontractors, suppliers, and internal pre-construction teams.

Specific Duties – include the following and other duties as may be assigned:

  • Digital Pipeline Management
    • Maintain the master bid schedule and manage cloud-based document servers to ensure all stakeholders have the latest revision sets.
  • Precision Takeoffs
    • Execute detailed material takeoffs for plumbing and sheet metal HVAC systems using the current software program(s) and other digital scaling tools.
  • Subcontractor & Vendor Relations
    • Lead the solicitation process.  Identify qualified bidders, distribute RFP packages, and perform “leveling” (comparing quotes) to ensure complete scope coverage.
  • Software Systems Optimization
    • Act as the internal admin for estimating software, regularly updating labor rates, material pricing catalogs, and assembly data to reflect market fluctuations.
  • Project Lifecycle Support
    • Change Management – Assist Project Managers in quantifying scope changes by performing “Plan to Plan” comparisons.
    • Project Turnover – Prepare comprehensive Handover Packages to ensure the field operations team understands the estimated budget, inclusions, and exclusions.
  • Quality Assurance
    • Audit estimates for deficiencies of missing links in specifications that could pose financial risks.

Role Authorities:

  • Bid Formulation
    • Draft and finalize formal proposals within company templates for final review by the Estimating Manager.
  • Scope Negotiation
    • Clarify scope of work and price points with subcontractors and supplies to ensure alignment with project specifications.
  • Data Determination
    • Select the most competitive and compliant subcontractor bids for inclusion in the final project cost.
  • Attend site visits or preconstruction meetings as directed.
  • Assemble bid proposals for estimator review.
  • Assist with assembling technical qualification packages.

Qualifications:

  • Technical Literacy
    • Proficiency in Trimble AutoBid and Blubeam Revu is highly preferred.
  • Analytical Interpretation
    • Ability to read and interpret complex mechanical drawings, P&ID diagrams, and architectural specifications.
  • Agile Planning
    • Capability to manage multiple bid deadlines simultaneously in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment.
  • Communication
    • Strong professional writing skills for drafting proposals and the ability to negotiation effectively with external vendors.
  • Problem Solving
    • A proactive approach to identifying “scope gaps” before they become financial liabilities during the construction phase.

Education

High School Diploma

AA degree in construction management or a related field (Preferred)

College or educational institution computer or software classes completion

Certification Requirements

Certified in MS Outlook, Word, Excel and Project (Preferred)

Valid Alaska Driver’s License

Experience Requirements

One year’s experience in the field of construction (Preferred)

2-4 years’ experience using software programs in a work environment
