duct cleaning

Why have your ducts cleaned?

If you have a forced air furnace, cleaning your air ducts periodically will increase your heating efficiency, reduce your energy bills and help your family breathe healthier air.

What goes on in your ducts: In a tightly sealed home, air pollutants — everything from pollen particles and pet dander to chemical fumes — get trapped inside your home and circulate through your air ducts. Over time, this debris can accumulate inside your ductwork. Not only does this build-up slow down air circulation and make your furnace work harder, it can create a breeding ground for mold, bacteria, fungus and other unhealthy contaminants.

The efficiency factor: Studies have shown that even a small buildup of dirt on heating and air conditioning components can reduce system efficiency by more than 20 percent. Having your ducts cleaned increases both the efficiency and longevity of your heating equipment. And of course with a more efficient system, you’ll enjoy lower energy bills all year long.

The health factor: Many illnesses are caused or aggravated by polluted indoor air. Children, the elderly and people with allergies, asthma or other respiratory issues are especially affected. Even healthy people can experience adverse effects of poor indoor air quality, including:

  • Headaches & fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Sore or scratchy throat
  • Nasal irritation
  • Dry, red, or watery eyes
  • Coughing
  • Aggravated allergy & asthma conditions

While duct cleaning doesn’t guarantee relief from these symptoms, it could be an important part of creating a healthier indoor environment for your family.

The duct cleaning process: When done professionally, the process usually involves a thorough inspection of your ductwork, power brushing and vacuum cleaning of all your ducts with specialized, industrial strength vacuum equipment, and then finishing with an environmentally safe sanitizer.

Recommended frequency: How often you need your ducts cleaned depends on several factors, including your preferences as a homeowner. Air quality experts say you should consider more frequent cleaning if you have:

  • Smokers in the household.
  • Pets that shed high amounts of hair and dander.
  • Water contamination or damage to the home or HVAC system.
  • Family members with allergies or asthma.
  • A recent home renovation or remodel.
  • A new home you’re just moving into.
