Midway Water Treatment System Upgrades

Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge

This project involved "right sizing" and upgrading the main water supply systems on Midway Island, approximately 3,500 miles from Hawaii. The original systems were built in the mid-1900s and sized for an Air Force Base of over 4,000. The replacement system was reengineered to efficiently serve 200 people. KLEBS set an owner-provided packaged water treatment plant, furnished and installed new pumps, and installed a new underground water service loop to serve the occupied buildings on the island. A key to KLEBS' success was precise planning. The remote island has no regular freight deliveries or barge service, so KLEBS had to schedule both materials and manpower using the only regular transportation service: a 20-passenger prop plane that travels to the island once every 2 weeks.
